終電

Shūden

The last train out of Shibuya, and the twenty minutes afterwards that decide what your skin does overnight.

Empty commuter train carriage at night, seats vacant under hard overhead light

Shūden — 終電 — the last train. In Tokyo it goes somewhere around half past midnight, and the entire city bends around it. Conversations end mid-sentence. Bars empty in ninety seconds. Anyone who misses it is out until five, which is a decision with financial consequences.

The train is the least of it. What matters is the shape of the evening in front of it: eleven hours out of the house, conditioned air throughout, a few drinks, not much water, and a walk home in whatever the weather is doing. By the time the door shuts behind you, skin has had a long day and is about to get its only real repair window.

Turnover runs faster overnight. Water loss through the skin runs higher overnight too. Both of which mean the twenty minutes before bed do more work than anything done at eight in the morning.

The temptation is either to skip it entirely or to overcorrect and do nine things badly. Neither. Take the day off properly — one cleanse, warm rather than hot. Put moisture back while the skin is still damp. Seal it. If the eyes have had it, that as well. Three products, four minutes, and it is genuinely better than the elaborate version you will not do.

The routine that survives the last train is the only one that counts.
