棚は一つ

One shelf, not two.

We didn’t build a men’s range and a women’s range. We built one range around a set of conditions — and skin doesn’t much care whose face it is on.

Two people sitting close together on a doorstep at night

Somewhere along the way skincare decided it needed two of everything. A version in a pale jar and a version in a dark one, shelved apart, priced differently, and often — once you read past the front of the label — formulated almost identically. We didn’t do that, and this note is the reasoning.

Built around a condition, not a person

肌の状態に合わせて

The brief was never a demographic. It was a set of conditions: city air, hard water, heating in winter and air conditioning in summer, and not quite enough sleep. Those conditions do much the same thing to skin whoever is wearing it — water leaves faster than it arrives, and the surface starts to look tired before the person does.

Skin doesn’t much care whose face it is on. It responds to what has been happening to it.

There are real differences between one person’s skin and another’s — oil production, thickness, how quickly it flushes. But those differences run along a spectrum that cuts straight through every category a shop could sort people into, and they are answered by adjusting how much you use and how often, not by buying a different jar.

What that means in practice

  • One formula per product. There is no second version in different packaging with the same ingredients inside.
  • Scented lightly, in white tea and ginger, bamboo and teak. Nothing that announces itself, and nothing coded to one side of a shop.
  • Vegan and cruelty-free across the whole range, without exception.
  • Four products in total. If a fifth ever earns its place it will be because the range was missing something, not because a new audience needed its own edition.

It ends up shared, and that was the intention

The thing we hear most often is that a jar bought by one person in a household is being used by two. That was not an accident of the design. A range small enough to share is a range that gets finished, and a product that gets finished is one that was used the way it was formulated to be used.

It is also, quietly, less waste. One supply chain, one set of packaging, one formula to keep improving — rather than two that have to be kept in step with each other.

Skincare decided it needed two of everything: a pale jar and a dark one, shelved apart, priced differently, and often formulated almost identically. We didn’t do that.
