Concrete, poly, steel

Board-marked concrete, polypropylene, brushed steel, paper. The material palette this brand was built from, and where it was found.

Board-marked concrete, translucent polypropylene, brushed steel and a folded paper edge in raking light

Tokyo is not, up close, a neon city. That is the night photograph, and it accounts for a very small percentage of the place. What is actually there in daylight is grey.

Board-formed concrete, still carrying the grain of the timber it was poured against. Polypropylene in flat translucent panels. Brushed and galvanised steel. Corrugated sheeting. Paper — in signage, in packaging, in the partition walls of buildings. Vending machines in matte white. A great many unpainted surfaces left to weather honestly.

It is a palette assembled from cheap, functional, well-made things, and it holds together because nobody involved was trying to make it decorative.

That is where this brand’s look came from. The paper stock, the flat greys, the mono type, the absence of any accent colour, the grid sitting behind the formula matrix — none of it is a reference to Japan in the shorthand sense. No wave print. No blossom. No red circle.

The same logic runs through the products. Four of them. One formula each. Nothing added for the benefit of the label.

Considered is not the same as decorated.
